I just finished losing a game like this I thought it would end in a draw but I didn’t use the proper technique like above going straight back and made the mistake of stepping to the side thinking I should mirror my opponents king I hate losing hopefully next time I get it right if situation arises again
But thanks for the video I had just lost a game because as you showed in the video when I got to last rank I made the mistake of not moving straight back instead I tried mirroring his king that was when he got the jump my next move pawn was in front but I was forced to move out way Blunder oh well hope I get right next time I’m going to watch the video again 😅
This is a brilliant explanation. I played a game today where I just had a rook pawn and the opponent just a king. I was confident of victory but the opponent did exactly as you explained so now I understand why we drew.
the best way to practise this, i mean, to see if you can keep the draw you are supposed to get, or to get the win you are supposed to get, is to play these positions against a strong computer that makes perfect moves.
Just make sure the computer cannot resign or offer draws.
And if you just keep playing, you have an opportunity to study king+queen vs king, and king+rook vs king. The concept of opposition will reappear when trying to win with king+rook vs king.
1. if the pawn can outrun the opponent's king, white wins 2. else if the pawn is a rook pawn, it is a draw 3. else if white has the opposition, white wins 4. else if black has the opposition and the black king is at the 8th rank, white wins
I have promoted a rook pawn before and won. But the key is how far is the other king from the pawn at the time.
Really helpful ❤
Exactly how I messed up ?? 😂

I was white against black(comp) we got a draw its not possible to win
Very instructive David, Thanx
This position also can draw.
This chap can do what most teachers cannot do well .. teach !
What about king vs king
Lol. I tried to see the draw with Engine. Ended up just giving away the pawn. It didn’t even try. It was level 10 computer too.
Thanks a lot, I have been struggling with this for a long time!

Imean this is so important. When you have a 1 pawn lead you can exchange pieces and use this technique to win games
4:54 is where the best part of this lesson begins
IT WAS BLACK'S MOVE AND HE STEPPED ASIDE AND I INSTEAD ADVANCED MY PAWN
Notes for myself. Assuming white has the pawn:
1. if the pawn can outrun the opponent's king, white wins
2. else if the pawn is a rook pawn, it is a draw
3. else if white has the opposition, white wins
4. else if black has the opposition and the black king is at the 8th rank, white wins
